We have a winner! Tiong Sue Lynn wins the 2012 Steak Challenge ahead of male competition

It was a beautiful day when the 4th Las Vacas Steak Challenge kicked off on Sunday 25th of March. Contestants gathered at the Kelana Jaya outlet to compete for the title and the trip to Australia’s Gold Coast. Last year, only one woman competed, while 2012 saw six female contestants.

The competition kicked off just past 2pm and after 30 minutes we had a winner. For the first time, a woman was crowned champion. Tiong Sue Lynn won the competition, eating a total of 1.94 KG of steak. She was presented with the first prize, a 4 days, 3 nights trip to Australia’s magnificent Gold Coast.

Adventuring the Land Down Under with Ern Yi (Winner of Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge 2011)

Some travel to get away from the hustle and bustle of life while others, to see the world. But, a truly transformative trip has the power to change lives. Just ask Tng Ern Yi, winner of this year's Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge, where he and girlfriend, Kim, enjoyed the winners prize from the competition in the form of an all expense paid trip for two to Gold Coast, Australia for 4 days and 3 nights during the last few days of May, "who would have thought, winning a 4-day 3-night trip to Australia from winning the Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge could change my life."

As a first time traveler out of the region and to the land Down Under, it was an eye opener for Ern Yi. Apart from the regular tourist adventures like Movie World, hiking up Mount Tamborine and feeding the Kangaroo's, the trip became more than just a holiday for Ern Yi. "The trip to the Gold Coast gave me a whole new perspective and vision on life," said Ern Yi. "Seeing the culture there, the way people live their lives, the honesty and openness; it has given me a new lease and direction on life. I'm convinced that this trip has changed my life to want to do be different and to do what I can for the better."

"Truly, I am grateful to Las Vacas for the chance they gave me to see life in a whole new perspective. I hope the next winner of the Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge will have the same opportunity to experience what I have experienced over the course of my trip; truly life changing!"

Kuala Lumpur, 21 February 2011: The steaks were tender and juicy and the competition was hot and heavy to win the 3rd edition of the Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge at Las Vacas' Mont Kiara outlet yesterday. Yet, only one chewed the most in 40 minutes. The winner, 24 year old, Tng Ern Yi earned the 4 day, 3 night trip for 2 to Gold Coast, Australia by consuming a Challenge record of 2.34 kg's of Australian Black Angus Rib Eye; out eating 61 other competitors.

The Challenge saw contestants tested to their limits physically and mentally, having to compete against fellow meat lovers and also with the weather. Contestants ranged from between 14 to 52 years old, many of them eating competitively for the 1st time. Through rain and sunshine, the competitors were backed by a vocal crowd of about 150 people who gathered to cheer on the contestants and were treated to an exciting display of steak eating where a total of 93kg's of premium beef was consumed.

"Las Vacas is committed to our community, and this was such a fun way to engage with the people around us. Truly, we deeply appreciate the participation of all our contestants who made the 3rd edition of the Las Vacas Great Steak Challenge spectacular," said Las Vacas' Managing Director, Yusof Dayan Iskandar.

Growing to 62 contestants from 6 contestants in the 1st year and 26 in the 2nd, awareness and reputation for this unique event has been steadily growing over the past two years. The Challenge this year also saw the introduction of the Australian Black Angus Rib Eye as the meat of choice for competition, continuing the belief that only the highest quality of Australian beef is served not only at the Las Vacas outlets, but also at the Great Steak Challenge.

Yusof further adds, "It is unfortunate that because we had set the limit to 62 contestants, we had to turn away 75 other people who tried to sign up after the limit was reached. However, the success of this event is definitely challenging us to greater things. We definitely look forward to expanding the Challenge next year; making it bigger and better. Look out for it!"
